3 tips to get you off the excuse train

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” ~Jim Rohn Good morning beautiful busy babes, It’s a gorgeeeous day here in Modesto, and actually a little warmer than it has been lately. Sometimes I’ll gripe about the weather being either too cold or too hot but actually, I love it. We are so fortunate to live in a state that gives us varied seasons to enjoy the sun or snow with just a short drive to beaches and lakes or to the slopes. I’m sipping a “Cookies For Breakfast” protein shake (you can get a printable recipe for this on my new blog here), and fully enjoying these early cooler mornings in my back yard. The pups are happy and keeping me company. Daisy going in for a quick smooch Earlier this week I received an e-mail from a lovely newsletter subscriber who wanted to let me know that she loved my online videos, and would love to get to the studio to take classes, but she “didn’t have time to workout”. Does this sound familiar? If you use this excuse keep reading. Even though I totally don’t believe you, I’m going to play into your belief (just for a moment) that you don’t have time to treat yourself well. I actually hear it every single day… “I don’t have time to exercise” “I don’t have time to prepare food that’s healthy” “I don’t have time to get a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, (insert any well deserved pampering modality here)..” I’m sorry, did you completely forget who you were talking to? My calendar is so jam-packed with appointments, tasks, kids functions, reminders, project ideas…ok, I’m making myself tired 🙂 My point is that I get it. I know how busy we all are and how crazy and overstimulating our environments have become. It’s very easy to get sucked into the next news story, Facebook post or reality show. I want you to take time for you. Whether that is waking up earlier and creating a new habit around working out, shutting off all electronics, or simply sitting outside and enjoying a nourishing protein shake or detox smoothie. 3 tips to get off the excuse train:

  1. If you’ve sworn you are NOT an early bird, then let’s ease into that. You’ll be amazed at how accomplished you feel when you can get up and workout before the day escapes you. But, you can’t expect to make this change overnight. If you’ve been waking up at 7:00am you can bet that a 5am alarm is asking to be smacked for a snooze button. Starting next week, set your alarm 10 minutes earlier. Get up, get a nice stretch and either take that time to prepare yourself a nice breakfast or get in this simple workout here that will get you going for the day. Remember, something is better than NOTHING! Try my Yoga Rocks video here.
  2. Start your morning off right. Instead of telling yourself how tired you are, how unhappy you are with your body, or dreading what’s on your to-do list for the day, flip that mentality. Be EXCITED! Stop negative thoughts in their tracks and start each morning with a gratitude sesh with yourself. Say 10 nice things about yourself out loud, starting each item with “I am”- I am beautiful, I am happy, I am fierce, I am strong. Start your list in the notes section of your phone. Add to it and repeat! This tip will get you in the mindset to take care of YOU.
  3. What’s eating you emotionally? Are you overeating? Sometimes we get caught up in emotions and feelings and that drives us to eat for comfort. This is a habit that can be broken over time. When you notice an emotional eating moment arise take a step back and ask yourself “am I really hungry?” or “is this binge triggered by a particular person or event right now?”. Your first defense it to get out of the kitchen or don’t throw certain items in your cart at the grocery store. Reflect on the moment, realize you are reacting based on emotion and find a new habit to replace emotional eating. Try going for a walk, calling your bestie and venting or taking a bubble bath.

Although that last tip may not seem like it has anything to do with killing excuses and making time for yourself, it does. Stressful circumstances often cause us to want to withdrawal from taking care of ourselves and get on the “excuse train” to putting ourselves on the back burner. Don’t get on that train!
