My fave protein powders and pre-workout supplements

“You know, all that really matters is that the people you love are happy and healthy. Everything else is just sprinkles on the sundae.” -Paul Walker

A few of questions I get asked often are…

“How do I get my family to eat healthy?” and “What kind of protein and pre-workout supplements do you recommend?”

Let’s start with getting the fam-bam to eat healthy…

This is a question I get often because when my Goddesses start improving their nutrition they find family is often hard to get on board.

I get it, I totally do. My kids lived on fish sticks, corn dogs, Top Ramen and apple juice for years. So naturally, when their mom became a health coach thru the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, they were less than enthused.

It’s no doubt that my main objective in life is to inspire and motivate others to be their best selves, but I was NOT prepared for the struggle when it came to my own family.

It can be rough when the people you love the most aren’t as excited about eating veggies and breaking a sweat? lol

When I first got started on my healthier lifestyle, I wanted my family in on it. But let me tell you, they were not about to eat my sweet potato cupcakes and kale chips. Major fail.

I would try to get my family eating new healthier recipes by swapping out old, unhealthier versions and there was always a complaint. But I didn’t give up.

What I did give up was being a “health pusher”. Pushing or forcing (at least in my experience) doesn’t work.

I just think to the times when I would get frustrated with “crap pushers” (those that try to get healthy eaters to cave into eating not-so-healthy foods, aka “crap”) and how it’s just as annoying coming from us “healthy pushers”.

I would get upset with my family and wonder why they wouldn’t want to feel better and live longer. So, I got sneaky (all for the sake of having them around longer!).

The less I emphasized on certain foods or dishes being healthy, I was met with less resistance. Major win. I eventually stopped saying “it’s healthy” or “it’s good for you”. They were more apt to give it a try when I wasn’t being so overbearing about it.

One of the easiest ways to get the family eating more protein, healthy fats and greens is by having them drink smoothies. And, I stopped calling them “smoothies” and told my kids they were milkshakes. hehe…

My father is the most challenging “client” I’ve EVER had. I love the man dearly, but I’m always on a mission to re-vamp his nutrition. We are started him with these healthy “milkshakes”

Below I’m going to share the recipe that I put together for Dad and, shockingly, HE LOVED IT…and he said, I quote “I could drink that everyday”. Baby steps. Now only if I can get him to ditch the soda.

Throughout my journey it took me a while to realize that everyone comes around in their own time when (and if) they choose. And that’s ok!

Often times my Goddesses will start Goddess Body University and stress out about trying to bring the entire family on board with the changes.

I always tell them to take the 90 days to make themselves a priority and not “push” their new habits and foods on their families. Of course, there will be those who are ready and hungry for the wealth of nutrition information. I encourage you to seize the opportunity to inspire them, you may save their life.

And now for the “milkshake” recipe, my fave powders and the pre-workout supplement I recommend (in no particular order)…

This has been my go-to lately. Not only am I using it for bomb ass smoothies but also in my oatmeal in the morning and it’s amazing. Plus it has chia seeds and sweetened with Stevia – so good!

I don’t like overcomplicate things (and sometimes I’m just plain lazy) and this is my standard recipe for my smoothies:

  • 2 scoops of Onnit’s Vanilla Acai Hemp Force Protein (this is a great alternative to dairy if you are vegetarian, vegan or sensitive) and it tastes amazing
  • Handful of spinach
  • ½ cup of frozen berries
  • 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • Optional- I’ll usually add some plain greek yogurt and a TBSP of nut butter if it ends up being more of a lunch meal
That’s pretty much the basic recipe! I dump everything into my NutriBullet and voila.

This has been my tried and true protein for over 10 years now. It tastes amazing (chocolate is my fave) and bakes up incredibly well.

I hate when I would buy protein powders from GNC and they taste like chalk and would end up sitting in my pantry for months. Don’t do that. Spend the extra few bucks and grab a good quality brand.

You can get UMP here.

Bulletproof Upgraded Collagen Protein

Collagen has some amazing health benefits. Especially because as we age we make less of it naturally. This power is fabulous. It has NO taste and it’s an incredibly easy way to add protein to my diet without a bunch of extra calories.

Since it’s flavorless I will usually add 1-2 scoops in my coffee every morning. Good stuff! You can check out Bulletproof Collagen Protein here.

If you struggle getting in protein, the 3 options above are a great way to add it into your diet.

BONUS- Onnit’s ShroomTech Sport

I also am frequently asked about what type of pre-workout I use. For years I was doing stupid stuff like Hydroxycut and Jacked 3D and all of that insanely dangerous chemical potion crap.

While going through IIN and reading about the dangers of so many things we eat, it became more and more obvious why I was feeling terrible, cranky and tired all of the time. I was pumping my body full of artificial energy supplements.

After I weaned myself off, I stayed away from fat burners and pre-workout stuff for years. I was just the last year that I researched all of Onnits products and felt comfortable trying something again. I’m so glad I did. I usually use ShroomTech 2-3 times per week (not daily so I don’t build a tolerance) and my workouts are on FIRE. Who knew I could run 5 miles without really training for it! Good stuff. If you order it, let me know what you think.

That’s it for today, Goddesses.

Hopefully that was helpful for you! As I create new content, I’d love to know what YOU want to hear about in upcoming blogs, videos and emails.
